I can’t quite believe that we’re already at the end of March. It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating the New Year! 2017 has been quite a ride so far: challenging, emotional, but above all extremely rewarding.
It really is a blessing to be able to do what you love. It’s also a blessing to be surrounded by people who support you and understand that being a photographer is not always the glam job it is perceived to be. There’s the admin, the hours spent researching and editing, not to mention the lack of a stable income (for those of us that freelance). But, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Back when I worked in image sales we would run a quarterly analysis, highlighting our successes over the previous three months and discussing the areas that needed improvement. What was our target, did we achieve that target?
So often we as photographers forget that we’re essentially in sales ourselves. We’re our own brands, and we’re selling our services. I believe it’s important to look back on the past few months of your business and celebrate the things that went really well for you. It’s just as important to identify areas in which you can improve. What's working in my business, what isn't? Is there a skill I need to learn, or something that's holding me back in my photography?
I wasn't sure if I was ready to dive into freelancing, but I'm so glad now that I made that decision! I’ve had the opportunity to work with some wonderful people since I officially re-launched Leigh Benson Photography in January. Here are just a few highlights from the last three months:
Band Night at Rumours Rock City
Megan & Renee's Combined Birthday Party
The Green Room at Pirates East
Touchbase Pro Corporate Portraits
Eileen, Megan and Renee at the Farm...
...and at Home
Ryan's 40th Birthday Celebrations
Critical Hit Cosplay Competition
GME Networking Day
Currie Boys' Blessing Ceremony and Family Portraits
Over the next quarter my goal is grow my network of industry professionals. I believe it’s important to have a network that you can trust – models, make-up artists, event planners, stylists, editors, and of course other photographers.
I’m also experiencing the wedding game from two sides. Dean and I are getting married in April 2018 so I hope to bring some insight into the planning aspect as both photographer and bride as we go looking for suppliers, dress-makers, flowers, design (et cetera – our list keeps growing!)
I'll be also blogging more tips and tutorials, photoshoot showcases, and local features.
I can’t wait to see what the next three months will bring!
Do you have a favourite image from the last quarter? How often do you celebrate your successes? Is there something special you are going to be working on this year? Comment and share on the Leigh Benson Photography Facebook Page and you could be featured in an upcoming post.
Everything you need to know about my family portrait sessions.
I’d love to hear from you – drop me a line.
