The Green Room at Pirates East

I'm a big fan of supporting local businesses, having recently started one of my own. So I was really excited to find a new gem right on my doorstep.

For those of you who commute to work via Greenside, I highly recommend making a stop at the brand new Green Room at Pirates East. They serve a great cappuccino and, with their free wi-fi and 7:30am opening time, they're an ideal stop-off point on route to Rosebank and surrounds.

I'm sure many of you will be familiar with the main Pirates club on Braeside Road in Greenside. Pirates Sports Club has the honour of being one of the three oldest sports clubs in the country, and the oldest in Gauteng. The club settled on its current grounds in 1952, but was founded in 1888, which means a long history of community and many sportsmen and women having worn the Pirates badge (including myself!).

The Green Room is the newest addition to the Pirates family, and is located on the other side of the road at Pirates East, at 4 Cruden Bay Road. The Bowls Club hall, which hadn't served much purpose, has now been given a fresh look and a revamp. I love that elements of the bowls club remain as items in the space.

Come hungry if you're going to attempt one of these delicious burgers!

The pricing is good and the portions are generous - I love poached eggs and these served on rye with asparagus spears make a fresh and healthy breakfast option.

For something more decadent, there's a brie and bacon croissant, or crumpets served with fresh mango and strawberries.

For the less adventurous (or less hungry) you also have the option of a more traditional cooked breakfast, or a plain butter croissant with fruit preserves and cheese. What better way to start the day than with a view over the bowling greens and a nice hot tea or coffee? Or, a milkshake (caramel popcorn!), while you plan your day ahead?

The lunch menu includes a savoury quiche, roast chicken salad and pot-pies made daily - there's something on both the breakfast and lunch menus to cater to everyone. Those who have a sweet tooth will not be disappointed with the selection of milkshake flavours, as well as treats such as dark chocolate mousse and cherry pies.

Freshly baked goodies, straight out of the oven.

Owner and chef Fiona and her team at The Green Room have done a great job - as their Facebook page says: We are super passionate about simply delicious food and coffee. And passionate they are. It's a friendly and relaxed environment to enjoy some really good food. The space is light and bright and it's also a great place for a meeting or coffee date. It's definitely on my list of local "coffices" (aka "coffee office") where you can set up your laptop and like me drink two pots of Rooibos tea while planning your monthly to-do list!

There's plenty of parking at the club and The Green Room is both child and pet friendly. This adds to the feeling that this really is the new neighbourhood local, where everyone is welcome.

Follow The Green Room on Facebook to stay up to date with all their specials (including later closing times Thursday through Saturday), and have a look at their website too. They have the full menu up on the site, which is a great help if you need extra time to decide what to try next!

I highly recommend taking a detour to The Green Room for your morning cuppa!

Cheers!
